THE SHOPS ACT

Holding that the law had been adhered to, the North London magistrate dismissed a summons under the Shops Act against A. W. Kimpton, grocer, of 71 and 73 Matthias-road, Stoke Newington.
   There is a communicating door between the two shops, but on Wednesdays and Thursdays this is closed. On Wednesday Mr Kimpton shuts one shop, and on Thursday the other, and as there is no general order as to the day on which all shops in the district shall close, he contended he had complied with the law.
   For the County Council it was pointed out that if such a contention were upheld the Act might become a dead letter. Could it be said, if Peter Robinson and other West End drapers, with whole rows of shops, closed some and kept others open, that they complied with the law?
