DARING ATTEMPT IN THOROLD-ROAD
WASTED INGENUITY
On Friday night an attempt was made to raid No. 251, Thorold-road, Ilford, the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Ernest Chalk, during the absence of the inmates. The front door was first tried, but, owing to the security of the fastenings, it refused to yield. Accordingly, the visitors turned their attention to the bay window alongside, and successfully forced up one of the sashes, snapping the catch in the process. They were then able to gain entrance to the front room, only to find themselves effectually barred off from the rest of the house. The door opening into the hall had been strongly secured, and withstood all attempts upon it, so that had the owner returned at this moment he would have caught the thieves in a trap. After exploring the room, and finding portable valuables, the intruders appear to have retreated through the window, no doubt to try their luck elsewhere before the night was spent.
