Police News

ARTIST'S TROUBLE--Joseph William Littlefield, variety artist, was charged with leaving his wife, Mrs. Elsie Littlefield, Ramsden View Road, Ramsden Bellhouse, and family chargeable to the Public Assistance Authority.__Mr. L. Davies, for the Essex County Council, said Mrs. Littlefield made application to the relieving officer for assistance, and stated that her husband had gone away. He left her with 1, and promised to send more, but had not done so. The wife and five children had since been chargeable, and continusly in receipt of relief. Two small payments were made by the husband, but his exact whereabouts were not known to the wife.__Defendant declared that his wife knew he went away and got a job at Scarborough, and she knew an address where she could always get into touch with him. He had receipts showing various amounts he had sent. "It is a question of finance. When I earn money, I send it. I have lost about 60 through this, because I had fixed up a concert party pitch on the sands. My difficulty has always been in regard to money." Defendant added that he might offer to join his old regiment, so that his wife would get an allowance.--The Chairman said the bench were not satisfied, and decided to dismiss the case.--Defendant remarked that he had no money to pay his fare back to the north.
