HULL ACCIDENTS

LADDER FALLS ON PEDESTRIAN AND CHILD

A ladder and a sudden gust of wind caused considerable confusion and bodily harm in Wassand-street, at about noon on Monday.
Frank Jasper Hardy happened to be passing beneath the ladder, which was some 26 feet long, when a sudden gust of wind dislodged it from the wall and fell almost on top of him. Hardy was taken to his home in Wassand-street, but was later conveyed to the Royal Infirmary, where he received treatment for a cut scalp, a fractured nose, a cracked left wrist, and several injuries to the legs. He was detained in the Institution for further observation.
George William Start, aged 4, also of Wassand-street was injured by the falling ladder, and although taken to the Infirmary and attended for leg injuries, was later taken home. Hardy did not see the child before the ladder fell and it is not clear how he got there, but fortunately he did not receive the full force of the blow.

HULL BUILDER SUED

Compensation for Two Hessle-road People

At the Hull County Court on Thursday, before his Honour Judge H. L. Beazley, George William Start (an infant by Edward Start, his next Friend), of 5 Welton-terrace, Wassand-street, Hull, claimed damages from Mr Brough, of 23 Arthur-street, builder and contractor, for personal injuried sustained on the 31st March last.
It was alledged that defendant, his servant, or servants, negligently left a ladder unattended and unprotected in Wassand-street, Hull; the ladder was left standing against a building where the defendant had been executing repairs, when as a result of the alledged negligence, it fell to the ground, striking the plaintiff and fracturing his right leg. Plaintiff also suffered from shock.
Mr Briggs explained that a sum of 20 had been paid into the court in full satifaction of the plaintiff's claim, but as the plaintiff was an infant it was necessary that the acceptance of the amount paid in should have the approval of his Honour the Judge under County Court rules. He further pointed out that having regard to the medical evidence before him, the amount was a reasonable sum to be paid in settlement, and he formally asked his Honour to sanction the settlement.
His Honour approved the settlement, and ordered that the amount remain in court for investment.

FIFTY POUNDS FOR COOK

In connection with the same accident, Jasper Francis Hardy, of 4, Paul's-terrace, Wassand-street, trawler cook, claimed damages for injuries to his scalp, a cartilage of his nose, and bruised face and legs.
Plaintiff was unable to follow his employment for ten weeks and was under medical treatment during that time.
Mr Waldo Briggs (instructed by Messrs Pearlman and Rosen) appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr E. H. J. Chambers represented the defendant.
Mr Waldo Briggs said a sum of 50 paid into Court has been accepted by plaintiff, and he now applied for costs up to the date of payment in and of that application. His Honour made the necessary order.
