OLD RESIDENT'S DEATH

The Late Mrs. M. Smith

For 33 out of the 36 years that Mrs. Maud Smith had lived in Chelsea she had been at No. 14, Guthrie-street. There she was a popular and well-known figure, always ready to help out anyone in trouble. During the "blitz" of 1940-1 she was always on the spot with cups of tea to cheer up her fellow shelterers during a bad night's bombing. She died recently in hospital at County Durham, where she was evacuated last year from St. Stephen's Hospital. Mrs Smith was 63.

She was buried at Brompton Cemetery and her son and two daughters, together with many relatives and friends, attended the funeral. There were many floral tributes from her family, relatives and from her friends and neighbours.
